Happy holidays: Fiona’s film tips and 2021 festival calender

2020 – the year that the digitization of film festivals really took off; That your festival virtually connected professional guests from all over the world; And that the program of your film festival could be watched from home.

Now, 2021 is just around the corner, and we are curious to see what it has in store for us. In this article, we look ahead to a new festival year and give you some film tips to get through the holidays.

In response to all social restrictive measures against the coronavirus, we quickly developed some powerful new functionalities in Fiona – so that film festivals could take immediate action. Together with our partner film festivals, we have successfully realized online screenings, video-on-demand shows, and virtual industry meetings. We are proud of the way our and other film festivals have held up. With all lessons learned, together, we can further improve virtual events and make digitization sustainable.

2021 Film festival calender

The new year will be kicked off by three festivals: TIFF (the one in Tromsø, Norway), Berlinale, and IFFR. This year, IFFR has is celebrating its 50th anniversary! The festival will be divided into two parts, from 1 to 7 February and from 2 to 6 June. The first part will be dedicated to their major competitions and industry program. In the second part, the festival looks back at the past 50 editions and offers a program for upcoming film talent. The two parts will be strung together by IFFR Unleashed with a selection of 50 films from the past 50 festival editions.

Followed by Sundance, Cannes, and Toronto International Film Festival, NFF, DOK Leipzig, IDFA, and many more!

Films tips for the holidays

Financial support is one of the greatest Christmas presents, you can give a film festival and a local film theater. So, skip the mainstream streaming platforms for once, and have a look at the website of your favorite film festival. Almost all film festivals offer (both free and paid) online screenings on their websites – please, keep in mind that most online screenings are geo-restricted. Don’t know where to begin? Besides the well-known streaming services, you can also find great films on arthouse streaming platforms. Such as Picl in the Netherlands, Lumiere in Belgium, and on Mubi you can watch renowned films whenever and wherever.
